Long Bio for Anat Baniel
Anat Baniel was trained as a clinical psychologist, dancer, and was a close professional associate of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais for over a decade.
Anat Baniel was born in Israel to a scientist father, and a poet and garden architect mother. She went to graduate school at Tel Aviv University to become a clinical psychologist. At the same time she pursued her passion for dance. She worked as a psychologist for the Israeli Army for a number of years.
While in graduate school, she began studying with Dr. Feldenkrais. After graduating from his training program in 1977, she began working full time as a teacher in his Method.
While still living in Israel, Anat began teaching the work in the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance; taught for Dr. Feldenkrais in his Tel Aviv Institute and in his professional training; and developed her own practice.
In 1982 Anat Baniel moved to New York City where she quickly developed a practice working with babies and young children; with musicians; with athletes and with adults suffering back pain, injury, etc. She also began teaching seminars and professional training programs worldwide.
In 1986 she founded her own training organization and has been involved in training over 1000 practitioners during her career. Between 1985 to 1989, she worked with the Tanglewood Music Center. She taught a program for the San Francisco Symphony musicians beginning in 1994 for over six years.
In private practice, Baniel evolved the practices and came up with new techniques that combine the teachings of Dr. Feldenkrais with her own understanding and techniques. She continued working intensely with high performers such as musicians and dancers, with people suffering from pain or limitations and those wanting to improve their life, and with an ever-growing number of children with special needs.
This combination of clients led Baniel to have profound insight as to how the brain learns and changes in powerful ways. She developed the Anat Baniel Method® that offers both the theory, fully supported by current brain science, and the practice—what she calls NeuroMovement®.
Today, Anat Baniel is world-renowned for the transformational outcomes her students experience and for training hundreds of practitioners to do the same.
Anat Baniel has helped thousands of people, both adults and children, from five days old to 90 years old, transform their lives physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Her work has helped high-performance athletes, musicians, business people, scientists, and other professionals move beyond their present limitations to achieve greater energy, strength, health, and success.
Her methods and approach have helped thousands of people suffering from aches and pains, those worn down by daily stress, and those seeking greater joy and effectiveness in their lives.
She is currently collaborating with Dr. Michael Merzenich, a world-renowned neuroscientist and brain plasticity expert, on a pilot research project creating an ABM-based movement program for traumatic brain injured (TBI) adults.
She lives and practices in San Rafael, California.

What People Are Saying
“This accessible, insightful, and practical approach for parents of children with special needs (and professionals) will profoundly deepen their ability to help their children improve. Baniel shows why our mainstream approach is often wrong and at times damaging. The approach (Anat Baniel Method) here, far wiser, far more subtle, truly holistic, far more ingenious, far more in accord with how brain development occurs, shows ways to access brain plasticity and yields far greater results.”
—Norman Doidge, MD, author of The Brain That Changes Itself and The Brain’s Way of Healing
“Scientists have defined the “rules” governing brain plasticity. Anat Baniel, working in parallel along a completely different path, has defined almost exactly the same rules and interprets them in practical and understandable human terms as the Nine Essentials that should contribute richly to clinical intervention.”
—Dr. Michael Mezenich, author of Soft-Wired and “father” of brain plasticity science
“This wonderful book illustrates how to engage the miraculous capacities of the brain to change and heal.”
—Harvey Karp, MD, creator of the DVD/book The Happiest Toddler on the Block
“Kids Beyond Limits gives parents and others who care for special children new hope and a new sense of possibilities.”
—Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post
“I have observed Anat’s work with severely challenged individuals over a period of more than two decades, and have witnessed transformations that are simply stunning. My hope is that the Anat Baniel Method will reach the greatest possible audience and that it will become a part of academic teaching, training and research programs in rehabilitation medicine and in physical therapy, and the sooner, the better.”
—Dr. Daniel Graupe, University of Illinois, Chicago
“Anat’s work with children is magical. She’s their brain whisperer. This hugely important work will free special needs children and their parents from fear and limitation moving them into a world of new possibilities and joy.”
