How Can NeuroMovement® Help Children with Special Needs?

With this gentle approach we focus on your child’s abilities, not her or his limitations. NeuroMovement® and the 9 Essentials utilize brain plasticity science and positive brain change to create new connections in your child’s brain. This often leads to spontaneous, extraordinary breakthroughs in movement, thinking, self-regulation, and connection with others.

“The approach here, far wiser, far more subtle, truly holistic, far more ingenious, far more in accord with how brain development occurs, shows ways to access brain plasticity and yields far greater results.” —Norman Doidge, MD, Author of The Brain That Changes Itself and The Brain’s Way of Healing

Elizabeth and Anat Baniel

The Story of Elizabeth, a Child Who Was Born Missing a Portion of Her Brain

Anat Baniel and Elizabeth

“Elizabeth has been a decisive influence in my career. Over and over again, I witnessed the power of her brain to change in the face of seemingly insurmountable limitations and I realized that if it is possible for one person, it is possible for others. Through a gradual process, over many years, I have defined the conditions the brain requires for powerful brain change—what I call the 9 Essentials. I evolved what I learned from Dr. Feldenkrais and my own experience into a coherent approach that I now call Anat Baniel Method NeuroMovement.” —Anat Baniel

Anat Baniel’s introduction to children with special needs began when she met a 13-month baby named Elizabeth in September of 1980. During this time, Anat was working with her teacher and mentor Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais.

Elizabeth was born missing a third of her cerebellum. Doctors diagnosed Elizabeth with global brain damage and said would never learn to walk or talk. Her prognosis was very bleak.

However, after working with Anat over many years, Elizabeth went on to walk, talk, and go to college, receiving two Master’s degrees. And she was able to dance at her wedding!

“Joshua’s prognosis was that he was an extremely precarious walker…and eventually, he would lose the ability to walk. He started doing ABM…and yesterday, he walked off the airplane!”

Helping Your Child with Special Needs Become a Brilliant Learner

It can be tempting to try to tackle children’s limitations by trying to “fix” them, by repeatedly “stretching” tight muscles or by trying to get them to sit, stand, walk, or talk when they can’t do it.

The greatest potential for transformation is not in trying to make children do what they can’t, but in finding ways to help each child’s brain differentiate and spontaneously discover how to go beyond his or her limitations.

Science shows that the brain has a remarkable potential to create alternative solutions to physical and mental disabilities. The key is providing the right conditions and information for this to happen.

NeuroMovement Is About Connecting with Your Child

Rather than focus on the limitations of your child, we connect with your child wherever she is at. We don’t try to make her fit into traditional “milestones.”

Instead, we focus on what he CAN do. The emphasis is on the brain of your child, helping it become the incredible learning machine it was built to be. We use very gentle movements, making sure your child is comfortable and paying attention to what he feels. Movement with Attention, along with the other eight Essentials, flood the brain with new information it needs in order to create solutions that transcend your child’s current limitations.
