The first essential is movement done with attention. It is a powerful tool for communicating with the brain and getting the brain to rapidly form new possibilities. Evolution of the Anat Baniel Method

Evolution is inherent to every scientific discipline and as a scientist, Dr. Feldenkrais understood that his method needed to evolve in order for it to stay vibrant, valid and useful. His intention was for his work to develop as increased scientific knowledge and accumulated teaching experience brought more insight, greater understanding and the formation of new techniques.

Anat, in 11 years of apprenticeship and close cooperation with Dr. Feldenkrais, followed by 24 years of continued practice, teaching, study, and discovery combined with her experience as a clinical psychologist and dancer, has been steadily evolving and refining the Feldenkrais Method to the present Anat Baniel Method. The method and theory that Dr. Feldenkrais developed was and still is an immense breakthrough in human knowledge. Yet he rarely explained his underlying theories and preferred to demonstrate them through his actual work with clients and students. From the start and during the thousands of hours that Anat Baniel spent being trained by Dr. Feldenkrais, observing him work with clients and groups, and later working with him and teaching side by side, and eventually in her own practice, she continuously worked not just to master the techniques but to actually understand and develop the theoretical basis for explaining the remarkable outcomes she observed.

About Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, a physicist, engineer and judo master, pioneered a learning system that uses movement and awareness of self to bring about remarkable changes in the human mind and body.  Dr. Feldenkrais was born in Russia in 1904. Early on, in the 1940s, when looking to overcome a debilitating injury he suffered to one of his knees, rather than focus on the muscles and tendons associated with his injury, Dr. Feldenkrais realized that it is his brain that needs and can find new ways to organize and move that leg successfully, despite the injury.

He formulated the understanding that as humans, we are fully dependent on learning throughout our life and that the human brain is built to continue learning and growing at any age. This learning is not a luxury but a necessity for our health and well-being. Movement was the means he chose to communicate with the brain. He made the early connection that how people learn and whether they continue to learn is closely related to how well they function and feel. He understood that each human brain has a built-in capacity to function better or worse, on higher or lower levels. He then proceeded to develop an understanding of the conditions the brain needs in order for it to function and learn best. Based on that understanding he was able to develop concrete ways to communicate with the brain directly, primarily through movement and awareness, and bring about remarkable changes for his students.
