Why We Have Joint Pain
When posture and movement are poorly organized, the forces move through

pain is the result of accidents or illness. When we try to protect
ourselves from the pain, we often exacerbate the situation by creating
poorly organized patterns of movement that cause us even more pain
and chronic pain. No matter the cause of the pain, the speed at which

Ericka is a child psychiatrist suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.
Erika first came to work with Ms Baniel, when she was 45 years old. She
told Anat about the different arthritis treatments and remedies she had
tried. She already had surgery on one of her hands and was scheduled
to have a second surgery on her other hand to try to repair some of the
disfigurement in her fingers. Erika also suffered from severe pain in
her hip joints which caused her balance and walking to be very precarious.
She could no longer lift her arms up past her shoulders. Her doctor told
her that not only would she never be able to lift her arms any higher,
but that she should expect to get worse due to her illness.
None of the arthritis treatments that Erika tried provided relief to
her hip and other joint pain and her condition was continuously deteriorating.
Could anything be done to help Erika? Surprisingly, the answer is YES!
Anat asked Erika to lift her arms up. She observed that the way Erika
was raising her arms would be limiting and painful to anyone – with
or without arthritis.
Anat had Erika lay on her side and very gently led her through a sequence
of movements that showed Erika how to move her back, her pelvis, and
her ribs in conjunction with the movement of her arms. At the end of
the 45 minute lesson Erika stood up. Anat asked Erika to lift her arms
once again. This time Erika raised her arms almost all the way up to
her head. The movement was effortless and pain free. Erika was stunned.
She said, “But the doctor told me that I would never be able to
do this again”
Erika had the surgery on her hand, but this time she healed much faster.
She did the Transformational Movement Lessons in her imagination
while in the hospital. Once at home, she continued to follow the Anat

CD program. Gradually Ericka added all the other at-home Anat Baniel

months after her surgery, Erika’s
balance and ability to walk improved so much that she took a trip to
Scotland – a dream of hers – and was able to walk everywhere – pain
