Back pain can rapidly be diminished by reintroducing the child-like
learning process of movement. Your brain will discover the least painful
ways for you to move if you simply give it the information it needs.

Here is the story of Ann who unsuccessfully tried everything in order
to get relief for her lower back pain and finally found relief with
the Anat Baniel Method.
Ann had two back surgeries. In the first, hardware was placed in her
lower spine in order to fuse it. In the second surgery the same hardware
was taken out because the pain became much worse as a result of the first
surgery. A tall, beautiful woman, she was in her mid forties when she
first came to see Ms Baniel. Ann had so much pain in her back that every
time she moved she tightened her whole body and held her breath. She
was in bed for hours every day and when she was up, she stood and walked
on curled toes. Ann tried various therapies with little relief. She was
in this condition for almost seven years.
Ms. Baniel did not tell Ann the “right” way to stand, sit,
or move. Instead Ms Baniel moved Ann’s body very gently giving
Ann’s brain the opportunity to experience alternative ways of moving
- pain free. Quickly, Ann learned new movement patterns that decreased
her pain and increased her flexibility and strength. Soon Ann’s
confidence grew and she began to do the Transformational
Movement Lessons Programs at home.
As Ann got better and better, she had to change many of her beliefs and

For example, she was told by one of her therapists to tighten her
belly and hold it in to “support
her spine” and protect her lower back. Once Ann discovered, through
these new techniques for back exercises, how to safely move her lower
back, she could stand with her feet flat on the floor, breathe freely
and feel more powerful in her body.
As Ann continued with her choice of a technique for back exercises
- the Transformational Movement Lesson programs, she had
less and less pain for longer periods of time. Today Ann drives, works,
takes care of her child, flies on airplanes, and is fully in life.
On most days she does not need to lie down anymore. When occasionally
Ann experiences pain again, it is never as acute as it used to be,

Most back pain is caused by poor posture and poor movement habits formed
by faulty learning, usually beginning in childhood. Scoliosis can also

When the
movement in our back is disorganized, some of the forces generated
by our muscles create friction that, over time, destroys body tissue
and leads to injury and pain. At times back pain is the result of
